Somewhere in the frozen birch forests along the Russia-China border, a leopard is doing something almost no other leopard on the planet has to do: surviving a winter that regularly drops to -30°C (-22°F). No zebra-striped savanna, no dense tropical canopy — just snow, silence, and a coat built like a parka.

This is the Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis), and it holds a grim distinction: it is the rarest big cat subspecies on Earth. At its lowest point in the late 1990s, wild numbers crashed to somewhere between 25 and 40 individuals — a threshold so low that population biologists still use it as a textbook case of a species standing at the edge of extinction. Decades of anti-poaching work, cross-border cooperation between Russia and China, and a dedicated national park have since pulled that number up into the low hundreds. It remains one of the most fragile recoveries in the animal kingdom.

What Makes an Amur Leopard Different From Every Other Leopard

Leopards are famous as the great generalists of the cat world — equally at home in African savanna, Arabian desert, or Indian jungle. The Amur leopard is the exception that proves the rule. It’s the only leopard subspecies adapted to a true continental winter, and its body shows it.

Its coat grows noticeably longer and paler in winter — up to 7.5 cm (nearly 3 inches) on the belly — shifting from a rich gold-orange in summer to a soft, faded cream that breaks up its outline against snow. The rosettes are also spaced further apart and have thicker black borders than those of tropical leopard subspecies, almost like the pattern was stretched to fit a larger, insulated frame. Its legs are proportionally longer, an adaptation for wading through deep snowdrifts, and its paws are broader, spreading its weight like natural snowshoes.

The Last Stronghold: Southwest Primorye

Nearly the entire wild population of Amur leopards is squeezed into a single corner of the planet: the temperate forests of southwest Primorye, in Russia’s Far East, spilling over the border into a handful of protected areas in northeastern China. Historically, the subspecies ranged much further — across Manchuria, the Korean Peninsula, and as far south as the outskirts of Beijing. Today, that range has collapsed to roughly a tenth of its historical footprint.

The center of the recovery effort is Land of the Leopard National Park, established in Russia in 2012 specifically to protect this population. It connects with tiger habitat, since the Amur leopard shares its forests with an equally famous neighbor — the Siberian (Amur) tiger. The two apex predators coexist by dividing up the landscape and, largely, the prey base, though a tiger will occasionally kill a leopard it encounters.

The leopard is functionally extinct on the Korean Peninsula itself, though unconfirmed sightings occasionally surface from the Demilitarized Zone — one of the strange side effects of a decades-long human exclusion zone quietly turning into an accidental wildlife refuge.

How Close to Extinction It Actually Came

The Amur leopard’s population history is one of the steepest declines ever recorded for a big cat. Fur trapping, forest fires, land conversion for farming, and the collapse of its prey base through the 20th century pushed the population down to an estimated 25 to 40 individuals by the late 1990s — a number low enough that researchers openly discussed the subspecies as functionally doomed.

Genetic bottlenecking from that crash still shows up today: researchers have documented physical abnormalities like kinked tails and unusual white markings, signs of a population that spent a dangerous stretch of time with too small a gene pool.

The encouraging news is that things have moved since those darkest years. Camera-trap surveys — a far more reliable method than the old technique of counting paw prints in snow — have tracked a real recovery. A 2014–2015 transboundary survey counted around 84 individuals. By the early 2020s, estimates had climbed past 100. Recent monitoring by the Wildlife Conservation Society puts the population in Russia alone at roughly 130, the highest density recorded in a decade of rigorous tracking, with additional animals in China. Even at the upper end of current estimates, the Amur leopard remains the rarest big cat subspecies on Earth — it’s simply no longer alone at the very edge of extinction the way it was thirty years ago.

A Solitary, Nocturnal Hunter

Like most leopards, the Amur leopard is solitary and largely nocturnal, patrolling a home range that can stretch over 100 square kilometers for males — a reflection of just how thin prey density is this far north. It hunts roe deer, sika deer, and hares, and is a capable ambush predator despite the harsh terrain, using patience and cover rather than speed.

One trait shared with leopards everywhere: an exceptional ability to climb. Amur leopards will haul kills into trees to keep them away from competitors — a habit that, in this ecosystem, mostly means keeping a carcass away from a hungry Amur tiger rather than scavenging hyenas.

Why This Recovery Matters

The Amur leopard’s story is unusual in conservation because it’s one of the few examples of a large carnivore population climbing back from a number low enough to make extinction feel inevitable. That recovery didn’t happen by accident — it took a dedicated national park, sustained anti-poaching patrols, prey restoration programs, and an unusually cooperative conservation relationship between Russia and China, two countries that don’t collaborate on much else.

It’s also a reminder of how fragile “recovery” can be at this scale. A population of 100–130 animals, confined to a sliver of its former range, remains critically endangered by any definition — vulnerable to disease outbreaks, habitat fragmentation, and the genetic costs of having passed through such a narrow bottleneck. The Amur leopard isn’t safe. It’s just no longer alone at the very edge.
